A friend of mine has this awesome blog where he writes about all the cool things he cooks (mostly bakes). I decided to try out one of his easier recipes. It consisted of about three ingredients, but even so, I managed to mess it up.
The first thing I needed to do was buy a boxed angel food cake mix. OK. I looked all over that store, there was no "angel food" cake mix. Is it the same as white cake? Some of the white cake mixes showed cooking times for one of those bundt-like pans, but some didn't. Also, do I HAVE to make it in a bundt-type thing? I don't have a bundt-type pan!
So I gave up and bought an angel food cake from the store's bakery. There, that part's done.
The frosting consists of whipped cream, milk, powdered sugar and instant pudding mix. Easy, right? For me, no.
I was whipping and whipping and whipping and nothing was happening. That's when I looked at the carton and realized that I had bought HALF & HALF, not heavy cream. Snapdragon!
So I'm off to the store AGAIN because I'm determined to make this cake. I even bought some strawberries and blueberries to make it extra special.
I finally got it done and my son would only eat the cake, my daughters would only eat the frosting, NO ONE wanted the fruit.
Is it any wonder I don't cook?
Please note -- the frosting was excellent the next day on French toast.

Pobrecita...you get an A for effort!
JHJD -- yeah, and a D for execution.
Well, it's your funeral.
Lois, Lois, Lois...
You are too funny! Really. You should write a book.
I think I'll have to make this cake for your family since you're the only one I've known to actually try one of my recipes.
The chocolate mousse stuff was awesome. It was also good on the cake, but when the cake ran out, I was glad there was still some mousse. Even if the rest of the universe disagrees, I still contend that fruit and chocolate is an unholy union.
(Side note: I don't like fruit with chocolate either!)
1. Why have neighbors if you can't borrow a bunt pan from one of them?
2. Half and Half will never form stiff peaks no matter how long you whip it and it will also never thicken in the sauce recipe I once tried to substitute for heavy whipping cream to be more healthy because in my mind half and half is the healthy choice. There's no such thing as skim milk.
3. You're the best. Please write a book. I would buy it and tell all of my friends to buy it.
VORQUEL -- funeral because I don't cook or funeral when I do?
CURTIS -- your recipes are awesome! They're just too hard for me to attempt.
NIGEL -- the mousse/frosting was really good and held up surprisingly well the next day.
CAMILLE -- so I'm not the only one making the whipped cream/half & half mistake?
Lois,
Thanks for reminding me about this blog! I'm dying to make the bombe now. And here is recipe for you, kid-tested this very week. Smash up 25-30 Oreos and put them in the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Mix together softened vanilla ice cream and one can of pink lemonade concentrate and spread over crumb crust. Refreeze. To serve, cut into pieces about 3x3". Since Oreos are not actually chocolate, and juice concentrate can't be considered a fruit, you may even get Nigel on board!
Ha, I was at the store today looking for an angel food cake mix. I finally found it on the very top shelf not by the other cake mixes. Crazy store.
MARY ANN -- my family will still find a reason to hate it (if I make it, they hate it).
LISA -- what? They had some? I'll have to look up next time.
No matter, you're good at lots of other things.
GEO -- yeah, I'll have to think of some.
LISA -- I finally found the angel food cake mixes! Yay!
