What I've Been Reading Instead of Cleaning My House

Thursday Thopping

(apologies to "Thursday Thong")

Today is my grocery shopping day. I'm trying something new in my quest to be a more savvy consumer. According to www.couponmom.com, the way to save money is to combine supermarket store sales with coupons. Of course, this works really well if your store doubles manufacturers' coupons (which only one store in my area does, and they only do it on random days -- which no one at the store could tell me when that is). My goal is to be able to buy groceries as cheaply as possible to try to build up my food supply. Here's my good deal for this week:

General Mills cereals, normal price $3.43 per box
Store special, 8 for $10.00, so only $1.25 per box
Combined with coupons, only 70 cents per box

SCORE!!!

Will you really do this every week? Really?
Because I think it is AWESOME!!

Cereal for that cheap? Sweet!

(No apologies needed!)

Okay, here's my question. Does this mean I'll have to shop at different stores? Because that makes me nutty. I have a hard time memorizing all the different layouts.
I shop about 90% of the time at a place where I bag my own groceries.
But I am trying to follow your lead. I would love to get my grocery bill way down. We stopped taking the newspaper so I rarely have coupons, but the coupons are usually for the more expensive products anyway...is there a better place to get coupons?

I totally stocked my storage doing that.

Instant oatmeal was on sale for $1.00 a box and I had $1.00 off coupon.

There is twp really great websites you can get coupons from. thecouponclippers.com and pinchingyourpennies.com

A few years back I became a member of "Shopping Smart" where for a small fee, comparable to what could be saved, they would send me a mailer tracking all the stores in the county, along with notifying me of the adds available in the Sunday paper. I saved a grundle, but alas, I eventually flaked out. I'm too lazy.

Sometimes I got items absolutely free. I once got boxes of General Mills cereal for 20 cents! Yup, I did.

That's a total score. I was able to stay home after the birth of my first son, not because my husband made alot of money, but because I became obsessed with coupons. Have you every gone to a bakery outlet store, and then frozen the bread? That's fun. You go with your bad self, I know you can do it.

B -- I'm not very good at finding deals, so we'll see if I can do it every week.

ELIZABETH W -- I must admit that I went to two stores on Thursday, but that was only because one was having an awesome deal on meat and the other was having the cereal sale. I hate going to a bunch of different stores, too. Wastes time and gas.

I'm doing a two-week free trial of the local paper so I can see if it's worth subscribing to for the coupons.

MONICA B -- awesome oatmeal deal!

I checked out your Web sites. My cheapness prevents me from BUYING coupons from thecouponclippers.com (at least until I can get this whole system down), but I loved all the tips on pinchingyourpennies.com. Thanks for the info!

AMN2DEEP -- www.couponmom.com does the same tracking for free, but only for ONE store in my area.

20 cents per box of cereal? You, my friend, are the master!

McMILLANS -- alas, I am cursed with a very small freezer, but I have gone to those bread outlet places before. In fact, my brother used to work for Wonder Bread and let me know when all the super good deals were.

pinchingyourpennies.com has a great system. They email me free coupons that you print off on your computer. The deals aren't as good as the ones you buy, but still worth it.

I had a hard time spending money on coupons, but my sister-in-law talked me into it. The first time I spent $6 and saved $280 I was totally sold.

MONICA B -- what? what? You saved how much? Hm, maybe I should rethink my not buying coupons philosophy.

I was so sad I missed that sale.

e-dub, there are coupons available over the Internet.

If you hear about any sales on QUINOA or HEMP SEED let me know.

CW -- that was a great deal. The best part is I went back on Monday to buy more cereal (I got more coupons in Sunday's paper) and they had it even cheaper! I guess the sale wasn't going as well as they'd hoped and they were trying to get rid of the cereal. Hm, I'll have to research this further. Maybe it's better to hit the sale at the end?

There are coupons you can print off the Internet, but not all stores accept them. In fact, the store that I mainly shopped at DOES NOT accept Internet coupons. I've since switched to stores that do.

GEO -- what the heck is Quinoa and exactly what are you doing with the hemp seed? Nevermind, I don't think I want to know ("accessory" and all that).
